Both Enno and The String Soloists were deeply drawn to the unique style of Dyens, which seems to belong between works by French composers such as Poulenc or Milhaud and the chansons of Brel or Nougaro. Roland Dyens said: ‘This concerto for guitar and string orchestra, written in homage to the divine Ida Presti, is in classical form, is marked by its ‘racial’ variety which permeates the whole and which unambiguously explains the word "Métis", a racial mixture.’ The solo works on this Album are a selection from his extensive repertoire, including some wonderful, less well-known works that most certainly deserve our attention.

His most famous work, the Tango en Skaï, is included here in an uplifting version with string orchestra. In 2013, Enno Voorhorst made an arrangement for guitar and string orchestra of the second movement of the Concerto en Si which was originally written for guitar orchestra. Together with Roland Dyens, they named it Sérénade and it is recorded for the first time on this Album.

Enno Voorhorst



Enno Voorhorst studied with Hein Sanderink, Hubert Käppel (‘Musik- hochschule Köln) and David Russell.
In 1987 he won the first prize at the 7th International Guitar Competition in Hof (Germany) and in 1992 the Dutch Guitar Prize. In that same year the first prize at the Seto-Ohashi Competition in Japan. He played in the important Dutch venues such as Vredenburg, de Oosterpoort, de Anton Philipszaal and his solo concerts have taken him all over the world from Japan to El Salvador.

Enno Voorhorst is frequently guest at guitar festivals such as Siracusa (Sicily), San Salvador (El Salvador) San Juan (Puerto Rico), Mikulov (Czech), Istanbul (Turkey), Deajeon (Korea), Moscow (Russia) and Tokyo (Japan).

His first album featured repertoire from Agustín Barrios Mangoré (Sony 1994, Brilliant Records 2005) and earned international acclaim. This was the beginning of an International career. The Barrios specialist Rico Stover wrote about this recording: ‘ This album played by Enno Voorhorst is the best I have heard thus far’. In 2012 Jorge Morel dedicated ‘Recuerdos del Camino’ to Enno Voorhorst with a similar comment: ‘en tus manos, Dios pone el espíritu de Mangoré’.

About the album ‘Around Barrios’ from 2013 Gitarre und Laute wrote: Enno Voorhorst has once again shown his class - not by bragging with virtuosity but by musical persuasion! And also his latest album with Bach- Pärt-Desprez received outstanding critics. According to Classical Guitar this fabulous album deserves to be in everyone’s collections.

Next to his solo recitals Voorhorst forms a duo with oboe player Pauline Oostenrijk and the Russian/Mexican viola player Milhail Zemtsov. Enno Voorhorst is currently Professor at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague, the Netherlands.

The String Soloists


The String Soloists is an international dynamic string ensemble based in Amsterdam, comprising 14 string players who perform under the leadership of its concert- master Janneke van Prooijen and artistic leader Lisa Jacobs. Their approach to music-making without a conductor is what distinguishes the group from the regular chamber orchestras. It demands intensive involvement from all the musicians.

Founded in 2015, The String Soloists have already performed at major venues in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy and were invited several times to perform live on Dutch radio and television.
Highlights of next season include their debut in the prestigious sunday morning series of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and concert tours to Italy and Portugal.

The repertoire of The String Soloists encompasses a variety of styles, ranging from Baroque to contemporary works. Alongside performances of the main- stream repertoire, the ensemble focusses on performing unjustly neglected works.

The composition of the ensemble enables them to play both as ensemble member and a soloist within the group. Besides their involvement in the String Soloists, all musicians individually are active members of the international music scene, both as chamber musicians and solo players.

Powerful Dyens, with strings and without. Superb interpretations of popular and less-played works. A CD celebrating the music of one of the greatest guitarists of the last 50 years is indeed something to rejoice in....Enno Voorhorst is a formidable guitarist whose portrait reveals a soul of great strength and depth. He really "gets" Dyens...This is a superb recording featuring playing of the highest order. Definitely in my Top Five for 2018!

Enno Voorhorst ist mit der Musik von Roland Dyens per Du, das wird einem beim Hören seiner neuesten CD rasch deutlich. Überhaupt findet er leicht Zugang zu den jeweiligen Werken, die er als Interpret bearbeitet. Von interpretatorischen Eigenheiten, wie Gitarristen sie oft angenommen haben, ist er weit entfernt – er dient der Musik und nicht ausschließlich oder mindestens überwiegend sich selbst oder seinem eigenen Ruhm und Ansehen … wie zahlreiche Kollegen....Er will nicht glänzen mit dem, was er da spielt – auch, wenn er es oft tut – und er ist auch kein musikalischer Altruist. Aber er weiß, was er da vor sich hat, Partituren nämlich, bei denen die Komponisten jede Note, jeden Strich und jeden Atemzug vorgedacht und aufgeschrieben haben. Und er nimmt das, was die Komponisten da liefern, ernst. Dass er diese Roland Dyens-CD herausgebracht hat, dafür müssen wir ihm danken! Wie gesagt: Roland war unser Freund! == Enno Voorhorst is in love with the music of Roland Dyens, and you will quickly realize this when listening to his latest CD. In general, he finds easy access to the respective works. Of the interpretive idiosyncrasies that guitarists have often assumed, he is far away - he serves the music and not exclusively or at least predominantly himself or his own fame and reputation ... like many colleagues .... He does not want to shine with what he plays - even if he does it often - and he is not a musical altruist. But he knows what he has in front of him, scores in which the composers have thought through and written down every note, every stroke and every breath. And he takes seriously what the composers are delivering. We have to thank him for releasing this Roland Dyens CD! As I said: Roland was our friend!

In de kalmte die hij waar nodig etaleert en in de onstuimigheid waartoe de muziek van Dyens hem soms uitdaagt. Het Concerto Métis is heerlijk geschreven, zowel voor spelers al voor luisteraars. Spannende ritmes die je te grazen nemen, lyrische melodieën om letterlijk-maar nooit te lang- bij weg te dromen. De balans tussen solist en strijkorkest is mooi en klinkt natuurlijk. == Enno Voorhorst is a guitarist with whom the love and passion for the music he plays is audible. In the calm he shows where necessary and in the turbulence to which the music of Dyens sometimes challenges him. The Concerto Métis is wonderfully written, for both players as listeners.Exciting rhythms that catch you, lyrical melodies to literally -but never to long - dream away on. The balance between soloist and string orchestra is beautiful and sounds natural.

Enno Voorhorst behoeft natuurlijk geen introductie: hij behoort tot de beste gitaristen die ons land rijk is en is naast zijn vele optredens (afwisselend samen met de hoboïste Pauline Oostenrijk en de altviolist Mikhail Zemtsov vormt hij het Macondo-duo) verbonden aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Dan zijn er de de elf van de in totaal veertien String Soloists onder primarius Janneke van Prooijen en artistiek leider Lisa Jacobs die de naam van dit ensemble volledig waarmaken: iedere strijker lijkt solistische eigenschappen te hebben, maar wel wel fraai en harmonieus ingebed in het geheel. Tom Peeters zorgde voor de prachtige opname. Een kostelijk album!

This new DSD release is a homage to the French guitar virtuoso and composer Roland Dyens performed by Dutch guitarist Enno Voorhorst for Cobra Records. Dyens made a career as a guitarist across genres and taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, succeeding his teacher Alberto Ponce. He composed several well-known solo pieces for the guitar, some of which are included on this album. Of particular interest, however, are the works for guitar and strings, including the guitar concerto 'Concerto Métis', which presents itself as an accessible, melodically memorable work. The composer wrote: "This concert for guitar and string orchestra, a homage to the divine Ida Presti, is in a classic form and marked by its racial diversity, which permeates the whole and clearly explains the word 'Métis': a mixture of races.» The String Soloists string orchestra can also be heard in two other works, the wonderfully entertaining 'Tango en Skaï' and the dreamily atmospheric 'Sérénade', originally the 2nd movement of the 'Concerto in Si' for guitar solo and guitar ensemble, here performed by Voorhorst for guitar and string orchestra. Enno Voorhorst and The String Soloists ensemble play the program very passionately and at a high technical level. The sound recording is very direct, but not dry and brings the music to the listener at the best sound quality. This tribute to French guitarist and composer Roland Dyens presents some of his valuable music in excellent performances. The guitar concerto is a real treat.

The recording was originally digitized using the dCS 904, which operated at DSD64. 

The original session tracks were edited and rebalanced (which meant going through the mixer) in the only available format for that purpose; the Pyramix 352.8KHz/24bit PCM (DXD). Prior to the advent of direct digital delivery, the next step in the production process from 352.8KHz/24bit PCM would be the DSD64 edited master for SACD production. What we have done now is also make a direct conversion to DSD128 and DSD256 from that original DXD edited master, without going through any interim processing steps.

Those DXD to DSD conversions are not up-samplings, as they would be going from one PCM sampling rate to another, for they are different encoding systems. PCM is a digital value sample based system, and DSD is a digital bit density modulated system. Conversion from any PCM sample rate to any DSD bit rate system is a remodulation, not an up-sampling.

We feel there is an audio advantage to this process in using the original files so we give you the choice and you can decide.
