Bill Evans

Evans was born in Plainfield, New Jersey and attended Southeastern Louisiana University. After a period in the Army, he returned to New York in 1955 and began working and recording with Tony Scott and George Russell. His subtly swinging, lucidly constructed solos with these leaders quickly attracted attention, and provided Evans with an opportunity to begin recording under his own name; but he was modest regarding his gifts, and for a time was reluctant to push himself into the limelight. All this changed after he spent several months during 1958 in Miles Davis's band, where he played alongside John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley as well as the trumpeter and became a central figure in Davis's shift to modal improvisation.

The period with Davis allowed Evans to organize his own trio, which featured bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian by the end of 1959. These three players developed a new and more interactive approach to trio playing, one in which all instruments carried melodic responsibilities and functioned as equal voices. LaFaro's tragic death in a July 1961 highway accident ended the existence of this seminal unit; but not before it had recorded four albums, two in the studio and two at a Village Vanguard performance shortly before the bassist's death, that influenced several generations of pianists, bassists, and drummers.


Regular performances in some of the world’s most prestigious venues have confirmed Florilegium’s status as one of Britain’s most outstanding period instrument ensembles. Since their formation in 1991 they have established a reputation for stylish and exciting interpretations, from intimate chamber works to large-scale orchestral and choral repertoire.

Concert venues include Sydney Opera House, Esplanade (Singapore), Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires), Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall (London), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam),Konzerthaus (Vienna), Beethoven-Haus (Bonn), Handel-Haus (Halle) and Frick Collection (New York). The numerous residencies Florilegium have held over the years include being the first period instrument Ensemble-in-Residence at London’s Wigmore Hall. This Residency was for three seasons and involved the group performing several series of concerts each year and becoming actively involved in the Hall’s education work. Since September 2008 they have been Ensemble in Association at the Royal College of Music in London, where they are responsible for coaching 18th century baroque chamber music. Their over twenty recordings for Channel Classics have been awarded many prizes including a Gramophone Award nomination, Editor’s Choice from Gramophone, Diapasons d’Or and Chocs de la Musique. Florilegium’s cd of Telemann’s Paris Quartets Vol 2 received the Classical Internet Award from The Bach Cantatas disc with Johannette Zomer was awarded a 2008 Edison Award, Dutch music’s most prestigious prize. The second volume of Baroque Music from Bolivian Missions was nominated for a 2008 bbc Music Magazine award, and bbc Music Magazine selected volume 3 as Disc of the Month for April 2010. A disc of music by Pergolesi was released in May 2010 and was bbc Music Magazine’s cd choice in the vocal category in July 2010. Future recordings include Florilegium’s arrangements of Bach’s Organ Trio Sonatas, and a recording of Couperin’s Les Nations.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

For more than 115 years, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) has been an essential part of Pittsburgh’s cultural landscape. The PSO, known for its artistic excellence, is credited with a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. This tradition was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck assumed the position of Music Director with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Heading the list of internationally recognized conductors to have led the PSO is Victor Herbert, Music Director between 1898 and 1904, who influenced the early development of the PSO. Preceding Herbert was Frederic Archer (1896-1899), the first Pittsburgh Orchestra Conductor. The Orchestra’s solidification as an American institution took place in the late 1930s under the direction of Maestro Otto Klemperer. Conductors prior to Klemperer were Emil Paur (1904-1910), Elias Breeskin (1926-1930) and Antonio Modarelli (1930-1937). From 1938 to 1948, under the dynamic directorship of Fritz Reiner, the Orchestra embarked on a new phase of its history, making its first international tour and its first commercial recording. The PSO’s standard of excellence was maintained and enhanced through the inspired leadership of William Steinberg during his quarter-century as Music Director between 1952 and 1976. André Previn (1976-1984) led the Orchestra to new heights through tours, recordings and television, including the PBS series, Previn and the Pittsburgh. Lorin Maazel began his relationship with the PSO in 1984 as Music Consultant but later served as a highly regarded Music Director from 1988-1996. As Music Director from 1997-2004, Mariss Jansons furthered the artistic growth of the orchestra, and upon his departure, the PSO created an innovative leadership model with Artistic Advisor Sir Andrew Davis, Principal Guest Conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier and Endowed Guest Conductor Chair Marek Janowski. These three conductors formed the primary artistic leadership for the Orchestra until January 2007, when the PSO selected Honeck to take the reins at the start of the 2008-2009 season. In February 2012, Honeck agreed to extend his contract with the PSO through the 2019-2020 season.

Manfred Honeck

Manfred Honeck has served as Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008-2009 season. After two extensions his contract will run until the end of the 2019-2020 season. His successful work in Pittsburgh is captured on CD by the Japanese label Exton. So far, Mahler’s Symphonies Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Richard Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben have been released to critical acclaim. The recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 has won an ICMA 2012 Award. Manfred Honeck and his orchestra present themselves regularly to the European audience. Since 2010, annual tour performances have led them to numerous European music capitals and major music festivals, amongst them Rheingau Musik Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Beethovenfest Bonn, Musikfest Berlin, Grafenegg Festival, Lucerne Festival and the BBC Proms. The 2012 tour focused on a week-long residency at the Vienna Musikverein. In August and September 2013, concerts took place in Grafenegg, Berlin, Bucharest, Paris, Du?sseldorf, Frankfurt, Lucerne and Bonn. From 2007 to 2011, Manfred Honeck was Music Director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart where he conducted premieres including Berlioz’s Les Troyens, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Verdi’s Aida, Richard Strauss’s Rosenkavalier, Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites and Wagner’s Lohengrin and Parsifal as well as numerous symphonic concerts. His operatic guest appearances include Semperoper Dresden, Komische Oper Berlin, Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Royal Opera of Copenhagen, the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg and the Salzburg Festival.

Breno Viricimo

Breno Virícimo (1988) is a bassist, guitarist and composer from the southern region of Brazil (Santa Catarina). While growing up in a musical environment, Breno starts learning Brazilian songs on the acoustic guitar. Later on, at the age of fourteen, he joins his father’s band as the bass guitarist.

 “I remember spending time in my father’s studio: ‘Estúdio Catarina’ which was next to my home. There he produced and recorded Radio Jingles and albums with local musicians.”

After studying and working as a musician for three years in São Paulo (2006 – 2009), Breno decides to move to Europe to continue his musical studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. In 2015 he receives his Master’s diploma in Jazz: Double Bass. 

“As a sideman musician living in The Netherlands, I’ve got the chance to play in many musical projects where I met musicians that I feel very comfortable playing with. In one of these encounters, the trio formation (Daniel, Udo and myself) was created as the foundation for this album. The repertoire that we chose for ‘Raizes’ connects me intimately to my culture and childhood. Songs like Carinhoso, Samambaia, Loro e Flor e o Espinho represent the beauty and depth of the Brazilian composers, from the traditional Samba to more experimental music. In addition, we have music composed by Laura Polence, Lilian Vieira Grupo.” 


Daniel de Moraes

Born in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, guitarist Daniel de Moraes (1971) was exposed to a wide range of music from an early age. His father was his first influence who inspired him to become a musician. Daniel's fascination for jazz music led him to study at the prestigious Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he graduated with a master’s degree in 2013. In his playing he combines textures of Latin American music with sounds from contemporary jazz.

Udo Demandt

Born and raised in Germany, Udo Demandt (1969) started playing drums when he was 8 years old at village events with his sister on organ and his brother on accordion. As a teenager he joined local brass bands, playing anything from March, Polka and Waltz to Folk. Later on he developed an interest for New Wave, Jazz and Latin music which lead him to study drums and percussion at the Rotterdams Conservatory in The Netherlands. Now, while focussing on Flamenco, Brazilian music and other crossover styles, his main purpose is to always capture the perfect sound and rhythm of any musical piece.
