2xHD Mastering and Jazzology Records present Explosive, a collection by American Jazz Pianist and Vocalist Dorothy Donegan.  Supported by bassist Jerome Hunter and drummer Ray Mosca.

Donegan, a protege of the legendary pianist Art Tatum, was primarily known for performing in the stride piano and boogie-woogie style. She worked in Chicago nightclubs and concert halls, remaining in relative obscurity from the time her 1942 recording debut until her performances at the 1987 Montreux Jazz Festival garnered her acclaim as a recording artist.

This high-resolution Analog to DXD transfer of Donegan’s works was done by Rene Laflamme at 2xHD Mastering.  NativeDSD’s Mastering Engineer brings you a Stereo DSD 512 edition created from the DXD transfer using Signalyst’s HQ Player 4 Pro Mastering Tools.  Exclusively at NativeDSD Music.

You’re going to love Dorothy Donegan. When you’re used to the styles of mellower, more restrained musicians, your first exposure to this dynamic woman can hit your ears like a pianistic plunge in cold water. That initial contact is rough, but soon you’re feeling great all over. Her left hand dispenses thunder with the speed and regularity of a summer storm over the desert while her right ignites dazzling bolts of lightning. Explosive!

All Music 5 out of 5

After a prolonged period of neglect, the great pianist Dorothy Donegan made this album, her first American recording in 17 years.

Joined by bassist Jerome Hunter (who had to be very alert to follow Donegan’s wild flights) and drummer Ray Mosca, Donegan performs eight songs (six standards plus two of her originals) in unpredictable fashion. She displays technique that is on the level of a masterful classical pianist.

Highlights include “Lover,” “Love for Sale,” “Donegan’s Blues” and a very explorative “St. Louis Blues.” Although this album helped give her some recognition, Dorothy Donegan’s next set for an American label would not take place until 1990.
