Episode 11 of the series “Next Generation Mozart Soloists” presents the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major and the Piano Concertos K. 40 and K. 449. The Piano Concerto No. 3 is an early work, based on compositions by other composers, while No. 14, written in 1784, showcases a mature Mozart who moved away from functional music to express his ideas in a more dramatic structure.
According to Swiss-Canadian pianist Teo Gheorghiu, the two works share the quality of being “concertos with predominantly cheerful and optimistic expression.” French violinist David Castro-Balbi notes that “of Mozart’s violin concertos, No. 5 has the strongest operatic character.” The two soloists are accompanied by the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg under the direction of Howard Griffiths.
