Rostov the Great may be regarded as the “Campanology Capital” of Russia. The bell tower in the Rostov Kremlin still retains its original complete set of ancient bells. And this is the only bell tower in Russia where, in the late 19th Century, the peals were transcribed as music score. After the revolution of 1917 bell-ringing was prohibited throughout Russia. But in 1963 ringing at the Rostov Kremlin was only allowed for a few times by exception.
In 2017 a group of bell-ringers was formed to study the music score transcriptions and examine recordings made in 1963 of bell-ringers who could still recall the old tradition. They studied the actual bells, their acoustics and the systems used to control them.
