Recorded in the vast acoustic of the Abbey of Saint-Ouen, Rouen, this album presents a sequence of ambient organ improvisations shaped by space, resonance, and tonal depth. The programme unfolds in two parts: the first inward and meditative, grounded in sustained pedal and slowly evolving harmonic fields; the second broader in scale and more theatrical in gesture, culminating in Prelude, Passacaglia and Lament, Op. 6 and the expansive Sonorous works.
Performed by Jake Purches on the celebrated Cavaillé-Coll organ of Saint-Ouen, the music draws on the instrument’s warmth, clarity, and architectural power. While Part I favours restraint and interiority, Part II opens outward, embracing fuller registration and heightened dramatic contrast.
Captured in high-resolution stereo and true multichannel, the recording preserves the organ’s scale and the abbey’s extended reverberation. The multichannel perspective articulates spatial separation between Grand Organ and Choir Organ, enhancing depth and localisation within the soundstage. No electronic instruments or Ai used in the project. All sound effects recorded by Jake Purches.
