Stravinsky: Muses is a compelling exploration of late-Romantic and early-20th-century repertoire through the lens of expressive chamber music performance. Anchored by works that balance introspection, lyricism, and dramatic breadth, the album showcases musicians whose interpretive depth invites listeners into vivid sound worlds across varied stylistic landscapes.
The opening composition offers a sweeping journey of melodic memory and emotional nuance, revealing both structural clarity and a deep poetic pulse. Through nuanced interplay and refined ensemble balance, harmonic textures unfold with warmth, sustained line, and a sense of rhetorical speech that brings out the music’s innate narrative arc.
The middle work offers contrast — its thematic urgency and rhythmic drive propel the ensemble into sharper contours, with rhythmic vitality and coloristic details underscoring the work’s expressive intensity. This movement succeeds in uniting individual voices into a single, energetic discourse, while preserving each instrument’s distinct character.
Closing the program is a piece marked by a quieter yet profound introspection: lyrical passages emerge with thoughtful pacing and clarity, creating space for reflection. Here the ensemble’s restraint and sensitivity reveal layers of emotional resonance that linger long after the music ends.
Across the recording, the performers demonstrate both technical finesse and interpretive understanding, drawing from historical tradition while infusing each phrase with personal conviction. The result is a cohesive journey that bridges expressive depth with architectural poise.

With Giovanni Guzzo leading, there is boldness and rigour in the performance of all three works. The label’s ‘Muses’ moniker may not impart much added value to an ungenerous neoclassical programme but producer and recording engineer Jared Sacks has certainly risen to the occasion. There have been more sheerly beautiful accounts of Stravinsky’s Apollo deploying larger forces. None, surely, with such a tangible presence.
The rendition of the Concerto in D is comparably brilliant if sometimes less than suave. At tempos marginally slower than those adopted by the conductor-less Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (DG, 8/00) Stravinsky’s stretchier lines can get chopped into more obviously ‘modernist’ units. Dumbarton Oaks is just as taut, which is not to say that the players are not also having fun. It’s good to see them name-checked in the accompanying booklet, which also contains a decent quota of photographs and comprehensive recording data.
