This recording presents Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor, performed by the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra under the direction of Sir Donald Runnicles. The performance captures the monumental emotional scope of Mahler’s symphony, one of the composer’s most celebrated orchestral works and a cornerstone of the late Romantic repertoire.

Composed between 1901 and 1902 during a period of intense personal transformation in Mahler’s life, the Fifth Symphony marks a turning point in the composer’s symphonic style. Unlike several earlier symphonies, it is purely instrumental and abandons the use of vocal texts, relying entirely on orchestral expression to convey its dramatic narrative. The work reflects both Mahler’s confrontation with mortality—following a serious illness in 1901—and the optimism of his relationship with Alma Schindler, whom he married the following year.

The symphony unfolds across five movements organized into three large sections. It begins with a solemn Trauermarsch (funeral march) led by the trumpet, establishing a tone of dark introspection. The second movement intensifies this mood with violent contrasts and turbulent orchestral textures. The central Scherzo forms the symphony’s structural and emotional pivot, radiating exuberance and evoking Austrian dance traditions.

The famous Adagietto, scored only for strings and harp, provides the symphony’s lyrical heart and has become one of Mahler’s most recognizable pieces, often interpreted as a musical love letter to Alma. The final Rondo-Finale resolves the work’s earlier tensions with triumphant energy and contrapuntal brilliance, culminating in a radiant affirmation of life.

Recorded at Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village, Wyoming, this performance reflects the Grand Teton Music Festival’s tradition of bringing together leading orchestral musicians from across North America and Europe. Under Runnicles’ direction—widely respected for his interpretations of late Romantic repertoire—the orchestra delivers a powerful and expansive reading of Mahler’s symphonic masterpiece.
