To record an album both fascinating and full of emotions, where I can capture the music that has accompanied me throughout my life, has always been a desire of mine. The double bass is the instrument through which I express myself in its purest form. I feel that creating this album is my way of expressing gratitude to it. It is essential for me that everything has meaning. By taking the sonata form as the guiding thread for the album, I have meticulously assembled the pieces, as if they were a puzzle. Each of the works holds great significance for me, representing an important part of my relationship with music.

The sonata is the structural form that has been widely used in European classical music since the mid-eighteenth century. Therefore, given that Johannes Brahms, especially his sonatas for violin and piano, has had the most significant impact on my musical life, I wanted to pay him a small tribute. Frantisek Hertl’s sonata stands as one of the key works for the double bass in the 20th century. Structured in three highly contrasting movements, it maintains an aesthetic line that runs throughout the work and connects them seamlessly. (…)

This work holds a special meaning for me due to my strong desire to perform it since I was a teenager. Recording it has been a challenging endeavor. The influence of American music has shaped my musical personality since my childhood. I always had a profound interest in ragtime, blues, and, especially, jazz. Frank Proto’s sonata allows me to step outside the aesthetics and musical avant-garde of classical music, enabling me to enter a world where I can engage in a musical dialogue with artists like Bird, Trane, or Monk.
