Dark Matter sits at the intersection of New York School minimalism and a modern interpretation of Krautrock, enriched by overtone-rich improvisation and contemporary playing techniques. Complex, interwoven rhythms—reminiscent of a Rubik’s Cube—open expansive sonic spaces. RUG is a duo featuring internationally renowned jazz drummer Hari Ganglberger and contemporary composer and guitarist Mario Bergamasco. Through their compositions and performances, RUG explores sound as surfaces, points, lines, colors and forms.
Drummer Hari Ganglberger grew up in Upper Austria and began his musical training at the music school in Perg. He studied classical percussion at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz and later jazz drums with Walter Grassmann at the Vienna Conservatory. In 1999 he moved to New York City, where he spent seventeen years working as a live and studio drummer, gaining extensive experience across styles including jazz, pop, soul, experimental music, rock, funk and world music.
Mario Bergamasco, born in Imperia, studied classical guitar at the Prayner Conservatory in Vienna, as well as instrumental and vocal pedagogy at the Feldkirch State Conservatory and the Berlin University of the Arts. While still a student, he performed regularly and toured internationally. His work is marked by stylistic diversity, reflected in projects such as Sangre de Muerdago, Süpple, La Ligne Maginot, Las Casas Viejas and Kryal. Alongside his concert activities, Bergamasco works as a freelance composer, creating music for theatre and film as well as ensemble works and vocal settings.
