Prokofiev’s Seventh Symphony, his last, was completed in 1952 under the shadow of the Soviet cultural crackdown that had dogged his final years — yet it is among the most luminous and lyrical works he ever wrote. Composed for a youth radio broadcast and thus expected to be “light” and accessible, Prokofiev turned the constraint into a virtue, producing a work of bittersweet simplicity that disguises considerable emotional depth.

The performance unfolds across the symphony’s four contrasting movements — from the reflective opening Moderato and the dancing Allegretto, through a tender Andante, to a finale whose apparent brightness carries an undercurrent of elegy.
