On September 27, 1788, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart made the following entry in his personal catalogue: Ein Divertimento à 1 violino, 1 viola, violincello; di sei pezze.(… in six movements). There is not much more we know about this towering work, K. 563.
Mozart himself may have played the viola when it was performed in Dresden the following year. (Mozart researchers are not entirely sure about this performance.) Printing the score ended up in the hands of the active, though not always accurate, publisher, Carlo Artaria, who called the work Gran Trio in 1792, the year after the composer’s death. The original score has vanished.
