Cosmos presents a chamber reimagining of Gustav Holst’s monumental suite The Planets, performed by Ensemble K under the direction of Simone Menezes. Originally composed between 1914 and 1917, Holst’s work stands as one of the defining orchestral achievements of the twentieth century, profoundly influencing both symphonic writing and later film music. Rather than portraying astronomical realities, Holst explores the mythological and astrological personalities of each planet—Mars the warrior, Venus the bringer of peace, Jupiter the jovial spirit, Neptune the mystic—creating archetypal musical portraits of human temperament.
In this chamber orchestration by George Morton, the vast orchestral canvas is transformed into a more transparent and intimate sound world. The reduction enhances clarity of line, rhythmic articulation, and character detail, allowing each planet to emerge with heightened individuality. The mythological dimension becomes more immediate: every movement feels like a distinct persona, vivid yet human.
Complementing Holst’s suite is Jupiter Overture by Nicolas Bacri, composed between 2021 and 2023 as a commission from Simone Menezes for Ensemble K. Conceived as a concise and brilliant overture inspired by Jupiter’s radiant spirit, the work unfolds in a compact sonata-binary structure. Transformations of a single thematic idea—chorale textures, fugal passages, waltz-like metamorphosis, tense ostinati—culminate in an exuberant, virtuosic coda. Symbolically, the piece reflects resilience, renewal, and creative rebirth.
Through this pairing, Cosmos bridges early twentieth-century symphonic imagination and contemporary compositional vitality, offering a luminous and character-driven journey through celestial archetypes.
