Vox Luminis, directed by Lionel Meunier, brings together the only two funeral masses Roland de Lassus ever composed: the five-voice Missa pro defunctis published in Munich in 1589, and the rarer four-voice Officium pro omnibus fidelibus defunctis, preserved in manuscript at the Benedictine abbey of St Ulrich and St Afra in Augsburg. Uniquely for this repertoire, the four-voice setting is transposed down a fifth for low male voices and is heard here with its complete Dies irae sequence, including an additional verse absent from the printed edition. Built throughout on Gregorian cantus firmi, both works reveal Lassus at his most austere and searching, closing a programme that gathers his entire funerary output onto a single recording.
