The Madrid Conservatory String Quartets explores a remarkable and largely forgotten chapter of Spanish chamber music from the first half of the twentieth century. The album is devoted to a generation of composers trained at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid, whose string quartets reflect the aesthetic diversity, ambition and international outlook of Spanish musical modernism.

Ranging from the 1920s to the post-war years, the works gathered here trace the consolidation of the string quartet as a central genre in Spanish composition. Influences from impressionism, neoclassicism and the Stravinskian legacy coexist with personal voices shaped by figures such as Conrado del Campo, Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Turina, as well as by broader European currents, including Bartók and the early Second Viennese School. Together, these quartets reveal a rich musical landscape in which tradition and innovation engage in constant dialogue.
