…when we were thinking what special recordings we might release in honor of Yarlung’s 20th Anniversary, Orion figured prominently. Our friend Rush Paul, well known to you at NativeDSD, kept asking for DSD tape transfers of some of Yarlung’s earlier recordings, and Orion seemed like the perfect fit after the success in Munich…

Yarlung Records continues its 20th Anniversary series of reissues from the master tapes in Pure DSD256—Hurrah! And with such a nice album, as well… This album comes with my highest recommendations for excellence of music selection, performance, and sound quality.
– Rushton Paul, Positive Feedback
This album captures one of those rare instances when recorded sound transcends its medium, transporting listeners directly into the heart of a live performance. Pianist Orion Weiss delivers J. S. Bach’s French Overture and Scriabin’s Fifth Sonata with astonishing nuance and power—so vividly rendered that it feels as though one is seated beside him on stage at Zipper Hall in The Colburn School. First experienced in the Rockport/Absolare room at the 2024 Munich High End Show, this recording stunned audiences with its realism and emotional intensity. Every element—from Weiss’s artistry to Yarlung’s minimalist two-microphone technique using Neumann U47s, and Rockport’s exquisite playback system—combined to recreate the magic of a true live experience.
True to Yarlung’s philosophy, the album preserves the natural acoustics of the hall without added reverb, allowing the warmth of the air, the resonance of the wood, and the immediacy of performance to speak for themselves. Produced in celebration of Yarlung Records’ 20th Anniversary with support from executive producer Don Saltzman, this release honors both the label’s uncompromising approach to purity in sound and Orion Weiss’s exceptional musicianship. With the generous help of Steinway & Sons and David Ida, and the technical guidance of Elliot Midwood, the result is an album that embodies Yarlung’s mission—to capture timeless artistry in its most authentic and lifelike form.

… once you’ve listened to Weiss’s interpretation, it’s hard to shake it from your mind. He’s no one-trick pony either, and his take on Mozart’s Variations on Salve tu, Domine are smoothly lyrical … The recording is pristine….

This is a great release. Well done! This album comes with my highest recommendations for excellence of music selection, performance, and sound quality.
Positive Feedback
Here, the miking is direct and simple: two matched Neumann U-47 microphones, short cabling, directly into the tape recorder. Microphone placement was determined by ear, experimenting with position changes a half-centimeter at a time over seven hours of placement testing. And no EQ adjustments, no compression, and no post processing. All of the EQ and balance decisions were determined by the microphone placement, not by twiddling dials afterwards.
The Absolute Sound
Scriabin’s fiery fifth sonata showcases Orion’s dynamism and delicacy as well as his ability to produce a breathtakingly broad range of warm, mid-keyboard colors contained within this impressionistic piece that ends as furiously (and explosively) as it begins. …the recording compellingly communicates every deft keyboard stroke of a young virtuoso… If your system can handle the piano’s prodigious low frequency energy and intense dynamics, you will be presented with a realistic rendering of a piano in all of its sonic and physical glory….
