Unlike his great contemporary Mozart, who died at 35 in 1791, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) lived long enough to be feted as a musical colossus in his own lifetime. Writing in the influential, Leipzig-based Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung in 1801, Johann Karl Friedrich Triest explains: all the composers of symphonies and quartets lag behind the man who has plied his craft for almost an entire half century with ever new, inexhaustible, genuinely amazing power, and became the greatest benefactor of German instrumental music. Johann Ferdinand Ritter von Schnfeld, author of A Yearbook of the Music of Vienna and Prague in 1796, holds Haydn in similarly high esteem, waxing lyrical about his string quartets: [they] are full of bewitching harmonies, and have this special quality of immediately attracting ones attention, holding it and moving on, as in a labyrinth, through flowering meadows, past babbling brooks, alongside roaring streams.

Die 4 Muziker spielen in historischer Stimmung mit wenig Vibrato und dadurch sehr schlankem Ton. Das String Quartet zeigt for allem in den fugierten Passagen auch seine virtuosen Qualitieten.

De Amsterdammers kiezen in deze werken voor een pittige, mooi homogene en vrij gespierde speelstijl waaruit een grote inzet spreekt. De frasering is royaal, de stijl klopt Op de afwerking valt nauwelijks wat aan te merken, op de opnamekwaliteit (vanuit de Doopsgezinde kerk in Deventer) evenmin. Op zichzelf een lofwaardig resultaat.
Luister
De constante in deze 3 werken is Haydns ongebreidelde fantasie als het op durf en moduleren aankomt. Juist door deze techniek uit te voeren benadrukken de musici het nieuwe van deze muziek in zijn eigen tijd. () De komende jaren wil the ASQ alle Haydn-kwartetten op gaan uitvoeren, hopelijk is Channel Classics daar dan ook bij om alles op te nemen.

Indeed, the entire ensemble manages to sound at once earthy, as well as elegant, encompassing the full expressive range that Haydn built into the music. In short, this is one of the best recordings of Haydn quartets on period instruments currently available, and the sound, as we have come to expect fro this label, is state-of-the art in all formats.
Fanfare
The first thing that strike one of the plangent sound of the period instruments. They have tang and bite, and yet they can sing out sweetly and exhibit power and strength when required. The four instrument match beautifully, and heir players create an impeccable ensemble. Haydn is beautifully served. This is a disc I just can’t get out of my CD player.
Sunday Times
The Amsterdammers are delectably spry in the opening allegros and witty in the finale. These quartets are full of musical surprises and sound fresh-minted as playes here.
Audiophile Audition
The musicians have convinced me of the viability of their approach, and I enjoyed this disc very much indeed.
International Record Review
There is profound seriousness in the strange tonal adventures in the development of the allegro moderato of op. 74 no. 1. The Amsterdam’s playing can also warm into beautifully lyrical phrasing, as when Haydn is at is most Mozartian.
