Following up her critically acclaimed recording of Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber’s Rosary Sonatas (also available at NativeDSD), violinist and musical director Rachel Podger leads Brecon Baroque on Just Biber, an album of Sonatas from Biber’s 1681 collection Sonatæ Violino Solo and his theatrical Sonata Representivo.

This is a DSD Exclusive, Not Available on SACD album, It is  available in Stereo and 5 Channel Surround Sound DSD 256, DSD 128 and DSD 64 plus Stereo DSD 512 only at NativeDSD. 

These works are extremely virtuosic with extensive multiple stopping and dazzling passages of stylus fantasticus. In Biber’s time, harmony was something cosmic, vibrating in a God-given resonance between human, instrumental and celestial bodies.

Dedicated to Archbishop Maximilian Gandolf, the sonatas were not only designed to delight, but also potentially to balm and heal; Biber described the sonatas as a kind of prayer for the Archbishop’s longevity and good health.

I’m guessing these musicians play standing up because there is a bounciness to the six sonatas that I’ve not heard before in Biber. It’s fresh, athletic, teasing and a bit gravelly here and there to sustain my attention between smoothie chords. Podger is totally on her toes, a challenging leader with a mind of her own.

Such fun! This is not the staid music of ancient times that some think Baroque music to be. This is pure sly humor in the form of musical entertainment.

This is an album to be enjoyed thoroughly. One to which you may return, and return again, to find new details, new passages, that utterly delight. I’m now on my third listening. I know I shall return often.

And the sound quality? Eminently that for which I’ve come to love the recordings of Jared Sacks. It is so natural sounding, so filled with life, so completely as if I have these marvelous artists with me in my listening room, and I am the quiet observer privileged to listen in to their live performance.
