An undisputed pinnacle of the violin repertoire, Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin represent one of music’s most formidable artistic and technical challenges — and on Assolo, Florentine violinist Alessandro Perpich meets them with complete mastery.
Composed during Bach’s Köthen period (1717–1722), the collection balances two contrasting forms: the rigorous four-movement sonata da chiesa and the more dance-oriented partita. Together they demand extraordinary polyphonic writing on a monodic instrument, requiring the violinist to simultaneously inhabit the roles of soloist and accompanist. Perpich navigates this dialogue with ease, moving fluidly between austere counterpoint and dance-like lyricism, between technical brilliance and expressive depth, while adhering faithfully to the styles and sensibilities of the Baroque era.
The program spans all six works: from the lyrical Adagio and incisive Fugue of the Sonata No. 1 in G minor, to the vast contrapuntal architecture of the Sonata No. 3 in C major, and culminating in the towering Chaconne of the Partita No. 2 in D minor — a monument of musical variation built from a single descending four-note cell.
