Pianist Peter Takács and violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson present Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin, Op. 23 and Op. 24 “Spring,” the second volume in Takács’s exploration of Beethoven’s sonatas for piano and violin. Originally issued together, the two works reveal contrasting sides of Beethoven’s emerging voice: the Sonata in A Minor, Op. 23, is compact, taut, and restless, while the Sonata in F Major, Op. 24, “Spring,” unfolds with the lyricism and ease that would soon make it one of his most beloved chamber works. Long cast as the archetypal “tortured genius,” Beethoven was already becoming a near-mythic figure in early nineteenth-century Vienna, admired for his fierce independence, volatile temperament, and extraordinary musical gifts. Together, these sonatas capture a moment when his originality, boldness, and expressive range were beginning to define his reputation.
