Tchaikovsky: Serenade & Bartok: Divertimento features the LSO String Ensemble conducted by Roman Simovic.

Tchaikovsky composed his Serenade in the autumn of 1880, at the same time as the ‘1812’ Overture. After several years spent travelling in Europe in the aftermath of his disastrous marriage, he had finally returned to Russia. His mind was very much on a successor to the Fourth Symphony, but the work that emerged in November was scored for strings only.

The Serenade – which was dedicated to Karl Albrecht, a cellist and fellow professor of Tchaikovsky’s at the Moscow Conservatory – was first played at a private concert there on 3 December 1880. Its public premiere took place on 30 October 1881 in St Petersburg at a concert sponsored by the Russian Musical Society, conducted by Eduard Napravnik, and it was repeated in Moscow in January the following year.

Press reviews

The Strad

“A polished and poised account of Tchaikovsky’s C Major Serenade. The big and bold opening sets the scene, though the performance as a whole is memorable for the subtle dynamic shades in the central movements… an acceleration in the work’s final bars showcases the ensemble’s virtuosity and brings the work to a brilliant conclusion.”

MusicWeb International

“Simovic is one of the reasons why this is a disc well worth seeking out: an unusual coupling, but a highly successful one. Superb recorded sound helps to complete the package.”

International Record Review

“With no more than 26 players taking part, the spectrum of colours is surprisingly delicate (Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings) … catching fire in the finale where the focus on gentle graduations of tone and timbre yields to the more earthy vivacity one might have expected from this source.”
