Violinist Ning Feng performs the Complete Mozart Violin Concertos with the Kammerakademie Potsdam on this Double Album from Channel Classics.
These 5 concertos were written because Mozart’s father Leopold was frustrated at the thought of Wolfgang on his travels neglecting the violin as a possible source of income, as Mozart could himself play the violin beautifully, and he wrote brilliantly for the instrument.
Composed mainly in 1775, these concertos display the theatrical twists and turns that were by now second nature to the 19-year old composer, with his thoughts and dreams perpetually fixed on opera and the drama.

Positive Feedback
Listening to Ning Feng always makes me smile. He has such a joyful style. His music-making is full of life, rich emotion, and a wonderfully nuanced attention the the small details that matter. I always come away feeling refreshed and fulfilled. And when the music is Mozart—ah, the wonders abound.
This two-volume set of Mozart’s complete violin concertos is filled with those wonders. Aroudn every corner of Ning’s playing I hear something just a bit different, a fresh inflection or a subtle nuance that keeps these familiar works continually engaging.
The Kammerakademie Potsdam proves to be an ideal partner in this delightful music-making. Intimacy, spirited repartee, and understated elegance combine to create performances of exceptional charm. Hurray for chamber orchestras of this caliber.
I keep returning to these recordings for another refreshing dose of sunlight, gentle humor, and quiet companionship. At the same time, I marvel at the formidable technical challenges that Ning Feng meets with such grace that they almost seem to disappear. I know those challenges are are very real—I simply never notice them here, as I sometimes do in less capable hands. Instead, the music just flows naturally, carrying my delight along with it.
Recorded by the inimitable Jared Sacks, the sound quality is immensely satisfying to both my ears and my heart. It complements and enhances the performances without every calling attention to itself. Everything simply sounds right. The clarity and resolution are all there, yet never demands notice. Instead, the presentation is utterly natural. The acoustic breathes, the violin’s harmonic overtones unfold, resonate, and shimmer, all in perfect balance with the surrounding space. This is recording mastery. It represents the kind of natural, convincing musical reproduction I always hope to hear—and all too seldom do. Well done!
