Split is a newly remastered edition of Patricia Barber‘s first album originally released on Floyd Records in 1989. Koch reissued the album on Stereo CD in 2004. It has been off the market for over 20 years.
This is the first album in which we hear her first versions of standards she revisits in later albums (“Early Autumn” on “Higher”, “Easy to Love” on “the Cole Porter Mix”). It is the ultimate gem for Patricia Barber fans who want to dive deep into her development as a singer and recording artist.Â
Jim Anderson and Ulrike Schwarz from Anderson Audio NY were entrusted to remaster the original mixes and release it on Impex Records. This newly remastered edition of Split is exclusively available from NativeDSD!Â
The album features Barber’s performance of several standards including Two For The Road composed by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, Easy To Love by Cole Porter, Early Autumn by Ralph Burns, Woody Herman & Johnny Mercer, Alone Together by Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz, Too Late Now by Alan Jay Lerner & Burton Lane and Then I’ll Be Tired Of You by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg & Arthur Schwartz. Lovers of Patricia Barber will find her at her best on this album. Her original handling of a tune. her special vocal soul and mind range going from moody and smoky late night into an intimate and optimistic love vows.
Of all her albums, Split is my favorite. She is just great.
AllMusic
Pianist and Vocalist Patricia Barber’s recording debut, Split, is a fairly straight-ahead affair featuring the idiosyncratic stylist on various standards and originals.
Showcasing her unique approach to Jazz, the album finds Barber mixing pointed and minimalist lines a la Chet Baker with a dramatic cabaret vocal style and complex harmonic post-bop passages. A template that longtime fans will recognize.
To these ends, Barber opens with a brisk Latin version of “Early Autumn,” takes a dusky vocal turn on “Easy to Love,” and shows her cerebral side on such originals as “Winter Illusion.”
Joining Barber here are bassist Michael Arnopol and drummer Mark Walker.
