Discover Lils Mackintosh in two defining Pure DSD recordings, captured a generation apart but united by the same smoky, unmistakable voice. One of the most distinguished artists in Dutch jazz, Mackintosh has shared stages with the likes of Oscar Peterson and B.B. King, and these two albums show both sides of her artistry: the intimate solo tribute and the full band at work.
Black Coffee with Lils Mackintosh takes you back to a three-day session in August 1994, where Mackintosh fronts a tight jazz combo through thirteen standards and originals, from the title track to Rodgers and Hart’s “My Funny Valentine.” Recorded on Schoeps microphones straight to analog tape, it is Mackintosh “at her finest,” with guest spots from pianist Jack van Poll and flugelhorn player Rein van den Broek adding extra color to the set.
A Tribute to Billie Holiday strips things back to their essence: a live concert recording captured with a single microphone, with nothing standing between Mackintosh and the room. Channeling Holiday’s legacy across twelve classics, including “God Bless the Child” and “Good Morning Heartache,” the recording was nominated for Best Analog Recording of 2019 at the International HiFi Press Awards at RMAF. Transferred directly from the original master tape by STS Analog, it preserves every nuance of Mackintosh’s timbre and the warmth of the room around her.
Together, these two Pure DSD releases trace the arc of a remarkable voice in Dutch jazz, from a full band session in 1994 to a stripped-down homage to one of her own inspirations.
