Anna Fedorova immerses herself in Brahms’ late piano works – recorded and direct mixed in Pure DSD 256. Three sets of “melodies without words” that Clara Schumann herself called poetry distilled to its purest form on the album Brahms: Intermezzi, Op. 117 – Klavierstücke, Opp. 118 & 119.
Written after Brahms believed his creative life had ended, these vignettes unfold with extraordinary intimacy. The Op. 117 Intermezzi carry the hush of a lullaby for an “inconsolable spinster.” Op. 118 moves from stormy uncertainty to a Ballade’s heroic-tragic turn to a final Intermezzo haunted by the Dies Irae. Op. 119 closes the collection full circle with a Rhapsody recalling the young composer’s first visit to Robert Schumann forty years earlier.
Fedorova finds in this music — tender, nostalgic, quietly reflective — a fitting retreat from the chaos of the present moment.

The Classic Review
Fedorova’s Op. 117 is best defined by her exquisite voice leading, present in each of the three works… Op. 118 introduces more distinct personalities throughout, all of which Fedorova faithfully captures. The A major Intermezzo (track 5) is exquisite, considerably more intimate than I’ve heard elsewhere, and tells of her impressive palette of softer dynamics. Fedorova’s E-flat Rhapsody, though, proves a most satisfying end to an excellent set: it is full of authority and reminds us of the composer’s signature symphonic profile.
